Fasting Fridays!
You may have heard of intermittent fasting or calorie restriction to promote better health.
In the field of longevity science, researchers have been studying the benefits of limiting food intake in the form of decreasing calories over short periods of time, and the results are promising. Controlled intermittent fasting has been shown to reverse age-related illness such as diabetes, joint degeneration, and dementia.
Michael Rae, a science writer for the SENS Research Foundation, a funding organization that promotes research in the biology of aging, has written extensively about, and practiced, calorie restriction. In his 20’s, Michael saw a decline in the health of his grandparents due to aging. Pondering his own mortality, he wondered if there was a way to slow the onset and progression of age-related illnesses like dementia, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Slowing these age-related processes could add not only years to life expectancy, but a better quality of life. Calorie restriction became a part of his normal routine in order to enjoy the benefits of living fuller and longer by slowing down the aging process.
Calorie restriction such as intermittent fasting has been shown to be a mechanism that is protective of the damage to DNA that is responsible for turning “on” and “off” genes that promote the development of proteins leading to age-related diseases.
So, why go through an intermittent fast or reduce calories that let’s be honest will create a little discomfort bringing on the pangs of hunger? Because you will not only lose unneeded weight and look better, but more importantly, you will feel better!
The ultimate health benefit of intermittent fasting is that, when measured, a person’s true “biological” age can be reversed. Meaning, a person age 50 in chronological years may actually be 47 in biological years.
Haven’t you heard your some of your friends say, “I am in my sixties but I feel like I am in my forties!” Or maybe, you’ve heard the opposite: a family member might complain: “ I am only 32 but I feel like an older person in my fifties!”
It’s historically been somewhat subjective, but with modern tools, we can accurately measure how intermittent fasting can make a difference.
Personally, I have chosen to do fasting on Fridays - (“Fasting Fridays!”). I drink coffee and lemon water from 6pm the night before to 6pm on Friday. The results are astounding and will support your PEAK Health journey.
